Unusual C3 and C4 metabolism in the chemoautotroph Alcaligenes eutrophus.
Phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) carboxykinase was identified to be the only C3-carboxylating enzyme in Alcaligenes eutrophus. The enzyme requires GDP or inosine diphosphate (GTP or inosine triphosphate) for activity. Pyruvate- and other PEP-dependent CO2-fixing enzyme activities were not detected, regardless of whether the cells were grown autotrophically or heterotrophically. It is suggested that tw...
متن کاملCyclic nature of poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate) metabolism in Alcaligenes eutrophus.
The cyclic process of biosynthesis and degradation of poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate) (PHA) was studied in Alcaligenes eutrophus under conditions of nitrogen-limitation of growth. A. eutrophus cells, which had accumulated poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) of 55 wt% content within cells from butyric acid, were transferred into a nitrogen-free medium containing pentanoic acid as the sole carbon source and c...

متن کاملNuclear magnetic resonance studies of hepatic glucose metabolism in humans.
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has made noninvasive and repetitive measurements of human hepatic glycogen concentrations possible. Monitoring of liver glycogen in real-time mode has demonstrated that glycogen concentrations decrease linearly and that net hepatic glycogenolysis contributes only about 50 percent to glucose production during the early period of a fast. Following a m...
